Louise Bourne

Biography

I am a painter living on the Blue Hill Peninsula of the Maine Coast. My paintings are responses to stunning experiences of color and light. I work from direct observation both outdoors and in the studio, and from memory, drawings and watercolors. I work in series that are on-going, abandoned, and then picked up again over the years, with new ones entering. Throughout all, my fascination lies with color progressions and intricacies, and with the juice of life. I divide my paintings into Land/ Sea -scapes and Figurative work; though there is plenty of cross over. The presence of a figure implies a narrative. I enjoy the tension between this narrative and the formal needs of the painting. Nature calls our attention like a magnet; I try to make my paintings have a similar pull, not as description, but as visceral experience.
