Overview

Figure & Ground is an exhibition of old and new, abstraction and figuration, combining work from the estates of mid-20th century artists with contemporary artworks that resonate and harmonize.

  • Figure & Ground - Opens August 10 @ gallery b.

  • Figure & Ground Expanded - A limited edition expansion, August 12-15 @ Annex Arts

Celebrating the Downeast Antiques Show taking place this year in Castine, Figure & Ground will have a special expanded show at the Annex on August 12-15th.

The expression “figure and ground” in art refers to the visual relationship between a subject and its background, specifically the interplay of positive space and negative space. It is a way of talking about how abstraction plays on a canvas, and a way of reading meaning in a representational painting.
