I did my first paintings in BFA programs at the Atheneum School, Univ. of Illinois and Univ. of Wisconsin.
After many years in other areas of art and design, ten years ago I came full circle and started painting again.
My first job when I left school was at the Milwaukee Museum of Art as an assistant curator of regional art.
I moved to NYC a year later where I worked for the Sonnabend Gallery. I also started a business of custom dress design and produced small editions of dresses for Bendels, Bloomingdales and Betsy Bunky and Nini.
Three years later I relocated my business to Los Angeles and continued to design and manufacture my line.
During this time I had the opportunity to work with the renown sculptor Robert Graham. He had designed a house in Venice CA for a collector of his work. This house was distinguished by the inclusion of other artists from LA and NYC. The Doumani house is now in trust for the UCLA School of Humanities and Fine Art.
In the early 80’s I returned to school and received a graduate degree in Architecture at UCLA and taught Color in Design for 2 years with the architect Frank Israel.
In the mid 90’s The Discovery Channel was interested in expanding into retail with plans for a flagship store in Washington D.C. I worked with the think tank of designers to develop a branding concept for them.
In 1994 I was invited to join the Santa Monica Watercolor Society- a small group of architects, a book designer, a landscape designer, a conservator and several fine artists. I was inspired to return to painting.
Work that came out of our weekly painting gatherings and then in my studio during the last ten years has includes:
Shiny tools and silver
Landscapes of Venice and Giverny
Abstracts inspired by my landscape painting
Watercolor collage using watercolor paintings from my landscape series.
As well I have a passion for figure drawing and work weekly in several open studios in LA. I am most interested in drawing the model in series of quick poses of 1 to 5 minutes.
Four years ago I spent a month at the American Academy in Rome as a visiting artist.
My paintings have been shown in LA and for 6 years at the Leighton Gallery in Blue Hill.
I live and work in LA and have a studio in Castine where I have spent 22 years during the summer and early fall.
